International Trade and Investment: Importance and Contemporary Challenges

On Saturday, October 23rd, Get Involved, in collaboration with the Just in Case team from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), held a virtual event titled: ‘International Trade and International Investments: Significance and Contemporary Challenges‘.
Key discussion topics included trends in the development of international economic law, the function of ‘due diligence defense’ in the context of offerings in the U.S. legal market, the potential conflict between the international obligation to enforce arbitration decisions and compliance with the EU prohibition on state aid, corruption and the investment process, and smart contracts in blockchain and contractual freedom in modern international transactional practice. These topics were presented by Mr. H. Gortsos, Professor of Public Economic Law at the Law School of NKUA and Chair of the Academic Council of the European Banking Institute (EBI); Mr. L. Dafermos, U.S. Associate at Global Capital Markets Milbank LLP; Mr. D. Kyriazis, Athens-based Lawyer, Doctor of Law from the University of Oxford, and Research Fellow in Law at New College of the Humanities in London; Ms. A. Papanastasiou, PhD Candidate at the University of Cambridge and Associate at Three Crowns LLP (London); and Mr. A. Spyridonos, Doctor of Law specializing in Commercial Law and author of several books and studies.
Overall, the event was organized by 17 individuals, with 171 online participants. During and at the end of the event, time was allocated for questions. Both teams also presented their initiatives, with Get Involved focusing on the 5th ECB Simulation Conference.
